Good Food for a good price. I usually get the combos because the portion isn't too ridiculously big and you get fried rice and an egg roll. I've never got bad food no matter what I order but my favorite is their orange chicken and sesame chicken. Staff has always been really friendly although they have messed up my order a time or two. Delivery ALWAYS takes close to an hour but food is always hot. I usually just go in and get my food because of the crazy wait time for delivery. The restaurant is small but hardly ever busy so it's almost always easier to just go there instead of having them come to me. Prices are average and in some cases cheaper than other places around. I definitely recommend it!

Typical usual Kansas City Chinese joint. Of note however is that they have a $4.99 lunch special that includes fried rice/lo mein with an entree and a side of soup, egg roll or crab rangoon (better known as cream cheese rangoon in these parts) Definitely not a place to go if you are looking for super authentic sit down slap yo momma good Chinese food, but if you're on a budget, need something quick, and you are tired of burger joints, this is a great alternative. In the end the point is if I needed to eat here again, I would do it. Oh, and the kung pow chicken here is also pretty good.

Great fresh made cheap Chinese food. Crab Rangoon is some of the beat I've had.

3.5 stars Good, cheap Americanized chinese carry-out with a friendly staff. Dining in feels like you're eating at a fast food place, but the food is pretty good.

The food is really tasty and always hot! I never have to wait in line, and its usually quiet and very clean. They have lots of low-fat options too, which I love!

First, let me clarify that Congress M did not go to China Star. The description does not fit. Maybe he went to China Tom. That aside, I've been going to China Star for years (since 2005), ever since they built the new buildings for Belle Roe Plaza. Yeah, the decor is simple with a large menu board, filled with standard pictures, on the back wall. But don't let that fool you. They are a simple family owned restaurant that has some of the best Chinese food around. And a fantastic value. Among my favorite dishes: General's Chicken, Hot & Spicy Chicken, and Pork with Garlic Sauce. The only thing I don't like is their Sweet & Sour Chicken... I prefer a very different style. To each their own. Their Egg Rolls and Crab Rangoon are great. And if you are in need of some soup to cure what ails you, or for that cold night, go for the Hot and Sour Soup or the Won Ton Soup. They are open to 10pm on most nights, and 10:30 on Friday Saturday, so you can take out some goodness on the way home. Just call ahead! And yes, they deliver. Finally, if you come for lunch, for under $6.00 you'll get an appetizer, a boat load of rice (white or fried) and a boat load of the main dish. Easily enough for two meals! (Unless you are really hungry.)

Although the moo shu pork was really tasty - this was WAY too much of a disaster overall for me to ever go back here. I made a delivery order (first time customer.) Tipped $5 before I realized that the entire bag was filled with liquid spilled over from the styrofoam box. My straw was wet, so it was almost impossible to get it unwrapped... Only to find out that the drink was wrong! And as if that weren't enough, my spring rolls were completely missing. Called the place, and they were only willing to give me a credit on a future order for the drink, and a free crab rangoon. After pressing for a refund to the credit card for the incorrect drink and the missing spring rolls, they did agree but hung up on me. Waste of money and time, won't return, don't recommend. Oh, did I mention delivery took over 45 minutes? Ugh...

Wow. I am not known for having a great memory. For some reason, I had in my mind that someone had warned me about staying away from this place. Well, if they did, they must have been trying to keep it for themselves. We used to have an office in this same section of buildings, but I never ate here because I was afraid to. I still don't know why I had that impression. Anyway, last night I took a wrong turn and instead of turning around I decided to go this way. I am ALWAYS in the mood for Chinese food so I thought I'd pull in there and see how bad it was. You know what? THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. It's not a dirty, grimy place like I was expecting. It is nice and clean. They weren't terribly busy, but busy enough. The family business had two of their children working and both were very polite and very professional. It's nice to see them learning responsibility and the value of good customer service. You could tell the owners appreciate return business. Some customers in line after me were greeted by name and the owner came out to speak to their children before he headed out with a delivery order. I was excited to get home to try out my order. The crab rangoon was really yummy. It was crispy but not overcooked like some places. You could still tear it into pieces without it shattering into shards of wonton crumbs. The sweet and sour sauce was fantastic. You could actually taste fruity flavors in it... it didn't just taste like red sugar. Their hot mustard was amazing! I can deal with hot mustard in packets if I have to, but they give you little sides of real hot mustard and it is just right. I am saving the leftover mustard for anything else I eat this weekend. I also got Mongolian Beef. It was good. It is labeled as spicy and I can handle pretty spicy foods. It didn't seem terribly spicy to me, but if you are not able to handle spices you'd might need to be careful. If nothing is ever spicy enough for you, you might want to ask for extra spicy. They add zucchini to theirs, which is an ingredient that doesn't appeal to me, but I'm okay with picking around the few pieces. Portion size was great; plenty for leftovers. If I had to make one critique it would be not having an option of fried rice or steamed rice. They give you steamed rice, which I know many people prefer. I'm not much of a fan of steamed rice and would have preferred simple fried rice with my meal. I ate a bit of the steamed rice, the taste was okay (I find many places have rice that tastes like dish soap) but the rice was a bit overcooked and came out in globs of mush instead of grains of rice. I think they prepackage the steamed rice in the take out containers so I might have gotten one that had been sitting around for awhile. It's okay because I wouldn't have eaten much of it anyway. In all, I think their prices are great...exactly what is competitive in the area, but with a great portion size. They have a clean, comfortable dining room and friendly staff. I will certainly be back many times. I guarantee it.

This place is the perfect scratch for that saucy, not-really-Chinese, Chinese food itch! Tasty, predictable dishes (sesame chicken, general tso, etc) smothered in saucy goodness for a cheap price. Online ordering is a must, for either delivery (expect about 30-50 minute wait) or takeout. It's not gourmet or fancy, but does that make it any less delicious?

For fast Chinese you cannot beat china star! Huge portions, great taste, great value. I use to like hy-vee's Chinese, now I'll never go back. You can't go wrong with their crab Rangoon, egg rolls or generals chicken.

This place is quick and ever so convenient. I generally crave items in the dumplings/noods category when my palate is hankering for an Asian flair. However, I love me some Crab Rangoon as well as some good ole General's Chicken. This place is dirt cheap, fast and convenient in that they take online orders which you can also pay for online. I order/pay online when I leave work and can swing by on my way home and it always seems to be ready early. It is clearly family run and there are usually a few of said "family" doing homework or other projects in the booths. But the charm of the dining area really stops there. There isn't much to look at in the seating area and we always get take out. Or delivery. Mostly takeout because their portions are so large, we have no need to order the amount of food that would require us to hit the $15 minimum. Which, is still quite low.

Solid Execution of all the dishes you would expect at a neighborhood Chinese take out restaurant. Always quick with your order and the food is always good. Best tip is that you can order on their website, makes everything easy and they normally have it ready in 10 minutes or so meaning that by the time you get there your order is ready.

This place is nice if you want to come and relax by yourself. It's generally very quiet and there is no tv and no background music, so you can have a nice conversation with someone or meditate. What I do like about this place is that you can see the cook and the cooking. Sometimes, it freaks me out when I can't see what the cook is doing to my food. Paranoid? yes!

This place is truly awesome. I love the general chicken and the moo shu pork. Over the summer I ate at china star at least 3 times a week. Pretty cheap and the portions are ridiculous! Best part is they deliver. China star is family run, every chinese restaurant that i have ever gone to where the whole family works there is always awesome. I highly recommend this place, try the homemade hot mustard if you really wanna shock your sinuses.

Just a good hole-in-wall, fresh and affordable Chinese food place. Nothing fancy or gourmet, but nothing wrong with that. No buffet so avoid if that's your after. Personally, I go to this place because it isn't a buffet. One way I've found to judge the quality of a Chinese restaurant is by their crab rangoon. China Stars is always hot and fresh, just like the food.

Cheap Chinese food. It's usually Americanized Chinese Food but the lunch specials are cheap only around 5 bucks but be there by 3pm. The food was prepared after we ordered so it was fresh and not sitting under heat lamps for hours.

I wanted Chinese the other night and went to three different grocery stores (I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot about checking yelp but to my defense, I was exhausted!). It was getting late and none of the grocery stores had food out anymore. That's when I did remember to check yelp and I am SO glad I did. I would've never tried China Star otherwise. It's just in a little strip mall in Roeland Park; I've driven by it a million times and never given it much thought. And to be honest, I am a little leery of trying strip mall Chinese places....just sayin'. But I was craving Chinese and nothing else was going to fit the bill. The place is very clean and bright. I probably wouldn't eat in just because there's not much room and two of the tables were taken up by the owner's children....coloring books, TV; etc. But I thought to myself how sweet it was that the entire family was there together. The teenage girl, who had her nose in a book, jumped up every time someone came in the door to take their orders. Darling. The food was good, hot, freshly made, and CHEAP. I didn't pay much mind to what I was spending because I was so hungry and I just kept thinking of things to add to my order....."I'll have egg drop soup, and a quart of sesame chicken, and chicken lo mein...." You get the picture. Anyway, I was expecting her to say something like $20 to $30. I could not believe it when she said $15! I took it as carry out and my family loved it too. We won't be going anywhere else for Chinese take out from now on. (I'm also thrilled that they didn't have a buffet. Chinese buffets are disgusting.)

Good cheap Chinese food. The staff was very friendly and the food was hot and fresh. We decided to eat in the restaurant which was clean but a little chilly in the dining room. Their crab rangoon is great!

This is a great place for American style Chinese food. Check out their orange beef, crab rangoon, and chicken on a stick. China Star's egg drop soup is perfect comfort food when not feeling very good. I love that they deliver and are always very nice.

There food is great! Their customer service is really nice not to mention their delivery option is a great plus. I've had Chinese food before, and this is probably one of the good one. I do recommend trying and they are not as pricey either.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
